While there have been evangelical candidates in the past from both parties – including a self-proclaimed evangelical president, Jimmy Carter – most presidential candidates have been pretty circumspect about their own religion for fear of alienating voters who don’t share their faith or denomination.
But this year there is an emerging primary within the Republican primary – which GOP contender will win the title “most Christian?”
Fighting for the title, Jeb Bush’s campaign released yet another political video this week, titled “The Power of Christianity.” Unlike some of his past ads that were religious in name but less so in content, this spot highlights Jeb’s faith overtly.
In this video, Jeb speaks at Liberty University in Virginia – the school founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell that has become a popular spot for politicians to visit, hoping to prove themselves as members of the religious right wing. It features clips of the former Florida Governor declaring, “There is no more powerful or liberating influence on this earth than the Christian conscience in action.” He continues, “Hebrew scripture and the New Testament still provide the moral vocabulary we all use in America, and may it always be so.”
With issues like abortion, gay marriage and transgender rights currently at the forefront of many political discussions, religion certainly has a role to play in the upcoming election.
Will it only be right wing Christian candidates who publicly identify religion as a foundation for their platforms, or will others follow suit to appeal to voters? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
