We really shouldn’t be surprised about this ad, given that it is from someone who referred to Republicans as Neanderthals and advised constituents under the Republican health care plan, “Don’t get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly.” But, given the massive amount of offense Florida Congressman Alan Grayson’s 2010 commercial had on opponent Daniel Webster (or “Taliban Dan”), Republicans, Social Conservatives, Muslims and many more people, we just had to include it.
The ad opens by stating that “religious fanatics try to take our freedom in Afghanistan, in Iran, and right here in Central Florida,” making a direct comparison between Islamist groups in the Middle East and American social conservatives. A sullen note is played in the background and images of repressed women in traditional Muslim full-body coverings appear throughout. It shows clips of Daniel Webster, or “Taliban Dan,” saying wives should submit to their husbands because it’s in the bible and features some evidence of Mr. Webster’s “fundamentalist radicalism:” Opposition to divorce, even for abused women, opposition to abortion in cases of rape, and denial of health care for battered women.
Yikes, maybe we are a little surprised.
Webster eventually defeated Grayson, but in 2012 Grayson came back in a newly-created district more favorable to Democrats. Now they are serving together in the House -- awkward!
Did You Know? Mr. Grayson seems to own up his harshness, adopting the url “congressmanwithguts.com” as his official campaign website. His brash and outspoken personality seems to have been effective this term, as he has successfully passed more amendments than any other representative.
