Vermont Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin announced last year he wouldn’t seek reelection, which encouraged three Democrats to throw their hat in the ring.
Former State Transportation Secretary Sue Minter, Former State Senator and Google executive Matt Dunne and State Senator and former ambassador Peter Galbraith will face each other in the August 9 Democratic primary.
Each candidate is running as a “Bernie Sanders-style” progressive – focusing on climate change, raising the minimum wage to $15/hour and making college tuition free. The three candidates have made sure to name drop Sanders throughout the campaign – even in political ads.
In Sue Minter’s latest political ad, the Democrat explains that climate change is the “greatest challenge of our generation.” The ad lists off Minter’s experience in protecting our environment and creating green energy jobs.
Matt Dunne kicked off his first TV political ad by referencing Sanders off the bat: “Bernie Sanders has started something amazing and I'm running for governor to make his vision a reality right here in Vermont.”
Dunne continues to lay out his platform including ban corporate money in politics, raise the minimum and fight for universal healthcare.
Peter Galbraith touts his successes on banning fracking in Vermont and promises to increase the minimum wage to $15/hour. He also proposes making college tuition free – and he says ending special interest tax breaks will pay for it.
“Paid for by Galbraith for Vermont – not the special interests,” Galbraith ends his ad.
Which candidate can most channel Bernie Sanders and secure the Democratic nomination? Stay tuned as we continue to follow the race.
