Politicians, journalists and celebrities attended the 101st White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Often referred to as “Nerd Prom,” or “Journalist’s Night Off,” this dinner is notorious for being an evening with needling jokes and political roasts.
Leaving no joke unturned, this year’s dinner lived up to the expectation with a handful of highlights from the evening.
Here are the I Agree to See’s team top five favorite moments from the 2015 WHCD:
To finish out his welcoming remarks, President Barack Obama called upon Luther, the anger translator, to help better articulate his more nuanced points. Portrayed by comedian Keegan-Michael Key of the Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” Luther painted a more colorful picture of what the President was saying, as he drew comparisons between CNN’s coverage of Ebola to an episode of the “Walking Dead,” and likened Hillary Clinton to the famed Mother of Dragons.
The President and Luther unexpectedly reversed roles at the end, leaving Luther as the mellow voice of reason, while, much to the chagrin of some of the politicians, the Comedian-in-Chief impassionedly spoke on climate change, leaving the stage with a final jab at the political non-believers.
Immediately following the President, SNL comedian Cecily Strong, took to the podium and delivered a series of jokes that both filled the banquet hall with laughter and side elbowing, and fell flat to awkward ‘booing.’
Beginning a little shaky, Strong opened with uncomfortable digs and controversial jokes about the secret service, but gaining speed with some quick and well-timed zingers at the press, she ended on a high note that left the Internet in hysterics.
In her final jab, Strong beseeched all journalists in attendance to raise their right hand and take the following vow: “I solemnly swear not to talk about Hillary’s appearance… because that is not journalism.”
Washington Post journalist Helena Andrews appears to have been a bit distracted during the opening of the WHCD. Although she has been accused of not listening to the national anthem, CNN didn’t miss a beat as they captured the journalist on film texting during America’s hymn.
Lighting the twitter-sphere ablaze with anti-patriotic sentiments, Americans took to twitter in outrage, expressing their distaste for the journalist’s actions.
The WHCD is a night for roasting politicians, and this year’s most popular ridicule recipient was 2016 presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz. Both President Obama and Cecily Strong got in on the fun, opening up Cruz to derision about his statements on being a “modern-day Galileo” in regards to his opinions on climate change, and how the individual donor who gave the Cruz campaign $6 million had “wasted his money.”
And finally, what would the red carpet at Nerd Prom be without commenting on the First Lady’s new hair-do? Spurring more than a few double-takes, Michelle Obama’s full head of curls stunned attendants and viewers alike, as it was the first time since being in office that she has sported this voluminous ‘do.
