Last year in Texas, Gerald Daugherty ran for (and won) Travis County Commissioner Precinct 3. As you might remember, during his campaign, Daugherty released one of the most light-hearted viral political ads of the 2016 election cycle.
Tom Hoch, Minneapolis Mayor hopeful, is hoping enough people remember that ad. He’s mimicking Daugherty’s ad to the tee in the hopes that he can follow the same path to his own election win.
The original ad is narrated by Daughterty’s wife, Charlyn, who explains that her husband – unfortunately for her – has no hobbies. We see Daugherty discussing complex policy – which he is clearly passionate for – with neighbors who look bored to tears.
He brings up the cost of housing prisoners, tax rates, public infrastructure (he even diagrams it with his dinner), and code violations – all of which receive blank stares. One friend asks Charlyn, “is he always like that?” Charlyn closes the video by desperately asking voters to “please re-elect Gerald…please.”
The copy-cat ad from Hoch follows the same general script, but replaces it with Tom Hoch’s policies – saving downtown Minneapolis, support of public schools, support of local businesses, and building affordable housing units.
Hoch’s husband, Mark, uses the same line as Charlyn and begs voters to “please elect Tom…please.” Hoch’s ad subtly highlights a few important things he wants voters to notice: he is an openly gay politician who contrasts the policies of the GOP.
While the ad has been seen before, it is a breath of fresh air from some of the hyper-partisan videos that have been popping up lately. Hoch, a first time candidate, is hoping his ad will have the same success that Daugherty’s ad.
