“The New York Times placed an ad during the Oscars to tell us that truth is more important now. But why now?” a new political ad from the NRA begins.
The NRA is going after the New York Times for an ad the newspaper launched during the Oscars yesterday – and claiming that the Times doesn’t really care about the truth, despite what their viral ad might say.
“But why now?” the ad asks. It then asks why the Times didn’t care about the “truth” when people marched in support of the Tea Party, when “jobs were declining,” when “drugs were flowing” and many other times. The ad shows images of ISIS beheading Christians, Benghazi and a CNN report about murders in Chicago.
“The truth is that the truth didn’t matter to The New York Times… because as long as liberals were ‘progressing’ the truth was depressing,” the ad claims.
The NRA then claims that people don’t look to the Times for the truth anymore. However, New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet explained on CNN, “Our digital subscriptions are going through the roof. Even print subscriptions are up. We’re a profitable company. We’re a big, vibrant, important newsroom.”
Donald Trump has attacked the “failing” Times 53 times on Twitter, but every tweet “drives subscriptions wildly.”
But the NRA wants to show that the mainstream media cannot be trusted any more – ending its ad claiming, “The times are burning and the media elites have been caught holding the match. Now they want your trust.” as the period turns to a question mark.
