Last night, Democrat Ralph Northam was elected to be the next Governor of Virginia – defeating his Republican rival Ed Gillespie by nearly 9%.
This wasn’t the only election of 2017 – or even the only election last night – but it certainly was the highest profile one… and as a result, the dirtiest one.
While things remained pretty cordial when Northam and Gillespie met in person, when the campaign hit the airwaves, things got nasty. And even though Gillespie (who used to be considered a moderate) was the one who got the most news coverage for his divisive ads, groups supporting Northam caused just as much of a stir with their ads. In fact, their most aggressive political ad was pulled from air just a few days after it was released (it’s still online though).
