Although the 2014 Midterm Elections are over and we have all moved on, there’s one thing we can’t get enough of – and that’s Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s campaign video, “McConnell Working for Kentuckians.”
Not only do we love the upbeat music and the different shots of Senator McConnell “working hard” for Kentuckians, but also the trend that was inspired from this video: #McConnelling.
Thanks to John Stewart and Mitch McConnell’s inspirational B-roll of him tending to his political duties like walking with a bunch of young people or writing on a legal pad or shaking people’s hands.
Thank you, John Stewart, for brilliantly dubbing the video over What a Man by Salt-N-Pepa and Sir Mix-A-Lot’s Baby Got Back. It’s hard to think that McConnell isn’t in on this joke too by the way he smiles.
Also, Stewart encouraged his viewers to create their own #McConnelling videos and Twitter was bombarded with new and improved ads. Some of the best can be found below.
Since super PACs and the candidates aren’t allowed to share videos in private, campaigns are becoming increasingly publicized in the hopes that endorsement groups will use the B-roll clips of politicians kissing babies and performing their all-American office duties in future TV ads.
So while McConnell might have to endure being inserted into every eighties sitcom title sequence from Full House to The Cosby Show, the awkwardness might just pay off when the same clips are being broadcasted in Kentucky living rooms everywhere.
Plus, we pretty sure he couldn’t help McConnelling when he won the 2014 Kentucky Senate race against Alison Lundergan Grimes and was named Majority Leader in the Senate.

The Truth Behind #McConnelling
In all seriousness, as much fun as watching McConnell’s half smile over and over and over again to different songs, there is a truth behind this ad. We all know that campaign finance laws are strict, but maybe McConnell has found a way to circumvent the rules surrounding candidate and super PAC relationsSince super PACs and the candidates aren’t allowed to share videos in private, campaigns are becoming increasingly publicized in the hopes that endorsement groups will use the B-roll clips of politicians kissing babies and performing their all-American office duties in future TV ads.
