Democratic candidate for Illinois Senate Tammy Duckworth stopped by Granite City, Illinois – where thousands of steelworkers were laid off just two days before Christmas in 2015.
Her campaign cut a 30-second political ad with testimonials from some of the laid off workers attacking her opponent, Republican Sen. Mark Kirk, for supporting free trade deals.
“He’s not supposed to work with China, he’s supposed to fight for our jobs,” explains Anthony, a former employee of Granite City Steel.
At a meeting with the United Steelworkers Local 1899, Duckworth laid out the difference between herself and Kirk – he describes himself as “an ardent free trader” while Duckworth insists she’s is a “fair trader.”
In an email sent out by the Duckworth campaign, Cameron Joost, Duckworth’s political director, explained, “While Republican Mark Kirk has never met a free trade deal he didn’t support, Tammy is committed to cracking down on unfair trade policies that hurt American manufacturing.”
