Maine Senator Susan Collins was one of the most vocal critics of the Republicans’ plan to repeal and replace Obamacare – and she held out all the way until Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell killed the bill earlier last week.
While Collins’ invite to the White House was lost in the mail, she was pulled on stage during the concert in Bangor, Maine by progressive Cyndi Lauper.
Lauper spoke very highly of Collins saying that “this woman is a hero. And she’s my hero. And she’s a Republican!” Lauper continued, “She helped us so much with the LGBT homeless youth and all the homeless kids. I was blessed to testify on her committee, which was bipartisan.”
Lauper handed the mic to Collins who responded to the kind words with a huge smile on her face saying, “We’re just glad you’re here, Cyndi. Yay!” Collins then exited the stage and Lauper continued with the concert.
Following the show, Lauper tweeted this selfie featuring Rod Stewart – who also performed at the concert – and Susan Collins posing together.
Thanks For the Invite
Despite Collins being a Republican, her steadfast opposition to the Republican bill got her disinvited to a closed-door meeting to discuss the bill. This caused Senator Al Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota, to burst out laughing. Wouldn’t the administration want to invite the swing votes to try and woo them? Instead, they were busy schmoozing those that are already on their side of the debate.‘She’s My Hero – And She’s a Republican!’
What a thrill having @cyndilauper in Bangor! I will back you up anytime -- on stage or off. #truecolorsfund pic.twitter.com/jLOsxtqkR3
