Helene Schneider, a candidate for California's 24th congressional district, is proud to be a beach-going Californian – so much so that she’s set up her campaign headquarters in a garage and in the ocean. (Kudos to her campaign volunteers for sitting through that epic wave shot!)
Schneider’s first ad of the campaign season, “Garage,” opens with several campaign volunteers hard at work at Schneider HQ – aka their boss’s garage. The camera then pans to Schneider, who explains how she started her campaign in her garage because she “believes in going to the people to get things done.” And by “going to the people,” Schneider means traveling around the district with a collapsible table strapped to the roof of her car.
Schneider, who currently serves as mayor of Santa Barbara, faces an uphill battle in her congressional bid. Although she’s been endorsed by State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Governor Gavin Newsom, her main opponent, Salud Carbajal, has the support of the California Democratic Party and Attorney General Kamala Harris. He also is well equipped with a large campaign fundraising arsenal of $1.7 million, compared to Schneider's $577,042.
Stay tuned to see if Schneider will surf her way to victory during the June primary and ride the wave through the November general election.
