Incumbent Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker is running for reelection and is taking his campaign into what some are calling ‘uncharted territories’ for a local mayoral race.
A University of Utah political science professor, Matthew Burbank, commented on Becker’s recent ad buy saying, “television ads are rare in mayor’s elections” because they are “far-reaching” and “often watched by many people who aren’t engaged in the race.”
One of the three ads airing in Salt Lake City homes, “Momentum,” aims to show voters the progress the city has made while Becker has served as mayor, as well as what his goals are for the next four years.
Becker’s campaign manager, Matt Lyon, said the Becker campaign feels the need to “remind people of the great things that are happening in Salt Lake City and what Ralph has accomplished over the years.”
Biskupski’s campaign manager Lindsay Barenz said their campaign has not purchased any television ads. Instead, they will focus on a “people-powered,” grassroots campaign.

Is Jackie Biskupski Giving Becker a Run for His Money?
During the August primary election, challenger Jackie Biskupski came out ahead of Becker, 46% to 30%. And after serving two terms as Salt Lake City Mayor, Becker is probably not used to being the underdog. One of the three ads airing in Salt Lake City homes, “Momentum,” aims to show voters the progress the city has made while Becker has served as mayor, as well as what his goals are for the next four years.
