For many Alabama voters, opposition to abortion is litmus test. And embattled Roy Moore supporters clearly believe they can block an upset victory by Democrat Doug Jones in the Alabama Senate special election by hammering his pro-choice views.
"Unforgivable" is a late campaign ad from the Donald Trump-affiliated super PAC American First Action. The ad begins with a pregnant woman receiving an ultrasound, along with video and audio of an ultrasound showing a moving fetus. "To most Alabamans, this is the sound of life and hope," says a soothing narrator.
But then the beep of a heart monitor turns to the sound of a flatline. The narrator's tone shifts: "To liberal Doug Jones, it's a sound that can be silenced."
However, the Politifact story from that date about Jones' abortion record has a far different headline and emphasis, "Moore's wife coins new anti-abortion term to attack his Democratic opponent." The article rates Kay Moore's statement, that Jones supports "full-term abortion," as "False."
Within the piece it notes that Jones has said he supports existing laws in which "late-term procedures are generally restricted except in the case of medical necessity." American First Action is leaning on the fact that Jones would not support a complete ban on abortions after 20 weeks to make its assertion.
An image of the Capitol under dark clouds with shown, with a giant Jones head in front, next to Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. The narrator delivers the final blow "Instead of standing up for our most vulnerable, he chose to stand with them. And that's unforgivable."
Some might say sexual misconduct against a minor is unforgivable too, but Moore's allies have to hope that Alabama voters believe support for abortion is the greater sin.
