Retired Air Force Colonel Rob Maness is not a fan of career politicians – in fact, he won over Tea Party hearts in his 2014 Senate race when he equated them to alligators from his native Louisiana.
The ad works as an extended metaphor that compares the swamp of Washington D.C. with the swamps of Louisiana – and establishment politicians with alligators.
With repeated clips of snapping gators and sepia-toned shots of Washington D.C., the camera trails Maness as he roams the swamps of Louisiana in an airboat. According to USA Today, the $50,000 T.V. ad buy came after fellow Tea Partier Sarah Palin endorsed Maness.
While this ad was certainly regionally appropriate, his alligator wrangling was not impressive enough for Louisiana. He lost to current Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who later went on to oust Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu in a dramatic run-off election.
But the ultra-conservative candidate and his GatorPAC haven’t entirely given up. Maness told Breitbart earlier this year that he was still “leaving the door open” to another Senate race in the future – and with David Vitter’s recent announcement that he will vacate his seat, Maness might be able to wrestle his way in there.
