The House GOP-affiliated Super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund wasted no time attacking newly sworn-in first-term Democratic congresspeople. In a series of targeted ads, CLF skewered those Democrats who suggested they did not want Nancy Pelosi for Speaker, but ended up voting for her anyway on the House floor.
The ads, which focused on Reps. Sharice Davids, Andy Kim, Lizzie Fletcher, Haley Stevens, Gil Cisneros and Dean Phillips, are a similarly constructed. A female narrator claims the targeted congressperson said "this time would be different." A statement from the then-candidate is aired implying opposition to Pelosi (using video or audio when possible), but never including an explicit vow to oppose Pelosi on the floor in the final vote for Speaker. The narrator then charges the congressperson "caved" with the "very first vote" taken by voting for Pelosi.
Over an image of puppet strings, the congressperson is accused of supporting the "same failed leadership" and "the same insiders pulling the strings."
The narrator delivers a cutting close: "It takes most politicians years to sell out" whereas the congressperson did so "on the very first day." It's a harsh reminder that those Democrats who flipped red districts will be intensely scrutinized by Republican political consultants.
