In the wake of the leaked Access Hollywood video that showed Donald Trump making lewd statements about women, and suggesting that he had touched and kissed them without consent, Democratic Senatorial candidates in key states have cut scathing attack ads against their Republican rivals. Each of the videos attacked the Republican Senate candidates for their initial support of Trump.
Trump’s uncovered comments have caused a significant rift in the Republican Party – causing many prominent leaders to rescind their support.
However, with control of the Senate up for grabs and less than 30 days until Election Day, Democrats are using this as a political opportunity to strike back and potentially get a bump in the polls.
“Where does Pat Toomey stand on Trump?” the digital ad begins. It then cuts to audio of Trump talking about Alicia Machado gaining weight, calling Rosie O’Donnell “fat” and then the lewd comments he made with Bill Bush on the Access Hollywood bus.
The ad then asks, “What does Pat Toomey have to say?” Clips of Toomey play where he strongly affirms he will be “supporting the Republican nominee.”
On Monday morning, Toomey denounced both Clinton and Trump – but he declined to say who he would end up supporting for president in November.
The McGinty campaign will spend five figures to run this digital ad, but did not specify for how long.
“There are moments in history that measure the character and courage of our leaders,” the narrator begins. The 30-second political ad then cuts to images of Joe McCarthy and George Wallace to compare Trump to these controversial figures in history.
The ad then attacks Portman for being a “coward” for standing with Trump after all his controversial statements – especially the leaked tapes.
“History will judge Rob Portman as a coward. What will we do?” the narrator ends.
On Saturday, Portman rescinded his support for Trump, saying in a statement, “While I continue to respect those who still support Donald Trump, I can no longer support him.” He continued to say that he would be voting for Mike Pence for president.
Ayotte has been trying to recover from a recent gaffe where she called Trump a “role model” – and the leaked tapes pretty much sealed the deal for Ayotte to rescind her endorsement.
However, Democratic candidate Governor Maggie Hassan wants to know, “why now?” The almost minute-long political ad features news clips of reporters asking why it took Kelly Ayotte so long to break with the nominee. The ad also notes that as early as last week’s Senatorial debate in New Hampshire, Ayotte said she would consider Trump a role model for America’s youth.
“What she values is her seat, she’s trying to keep it,” MSNBC commentator Nicole Wallace adds.
The ad ends, “Kelly Ayotte will say anything to protect herself.”
