Catherine Hanaway, Republican candidate for Missouri governor and former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, is ready to restore law in an “unruly state.”
The 30-second spot kicks off with clips from the riots in Ferguson and the “lawlessness” at the University of Missouri. However, the ad fails to mention that the Ferguson protests were sparked after 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer and Mizzou students were fighting racial inequality on campus. Instead, the narrator explains how the next governor needs to make Missouri “safe and strong.”
Hanaway chimes in from a courtroom, “Crime is out of control in Missouri and career politicians are to blame.” The Republican candidate calls for more community policing and harsher penalties for violence against police.
If Hanaway is nominated and later elected in November, she would become the first female governor of Missouri.

The Battle for the Missouri Governor Seat
Hanaway will face three other contenders in the August 2 Republican primary. Not much polling has been conducted among the primary contenders, but Republican Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder is expected to snag the nomination – since he is the only candidate in the race to have won a statewide election. If Hanaway is nominated and later elected in November, she would become the first female governor of Missouri.
