Democrat Phil Murphy is far ahead in the race to succeed deeply unpopular New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie. But Republicans aren't giving up without a fight. The Republican Governors Association is trying to tag Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive, as a hypocritical limousine liberal.
Its latest attempt is a 15-second ad that argues Murphy is paying his workers below what he thinks the minimum wage should be.
The pith, as you might expect, leaves out some detail. Murphy didn't own a fast-food joint. The evidence he doesn't pay his workers $15 is that during the primary his campaign posted an ad for canvassers that paid $50 for a four-hour shift, which amounts to $12.50 per hour -- above New Jersey's current minimum wage of $8.44 but below Murphy's proposal of $15.

The narrator is pithy: "Multi-millionaire Phil Murphy says he’s for a $15 minimum wage. But he didn’t pay it himself." As she speaks, a fast-food worker assembles burgers. The ad finishes with a photo of a tuxedo-clad Murphy, and the tagline: "Phil Murphy: he’s really loaded, really liberal, and really doesn’t get New Jersey."The pith, as you might expect, leaves out some detail.
