It wasn’t only Americans who found themselves fiercely divided in 2016. The rise of populist right-wing leaders and the Brexit decision has many Europeans on edge too. With many in the world drawing parallels to between the Brexit decision and the election of Donald Trump, it’s easy to feel like western Democracy is tearing itself apart at the seams right now.
But Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is having none of it. The company is making an unmistakable political statement with its newest flavor, “One Sweet World” – made up of 16% marshmallow, 10% salted caramel and 7% chocolate chips… seems like that makeup alone is saying something.
“We’re concerned that the dominant message we see in society today is one of division,” a post from the company under the video reads. “Whether it's televised political debates or newspaper headlines, it's sometimes easy to think the world is becoming increasingly divided. So, we've been thinking about how we can amplify a message of unity & love using the thing we know best... ice cream!”
The two-minute ad is set to the tune of Ben Cocks’ song, “One Sweet World,” and in it, we see an animated and angry lemon – unmistakably a riff on Donald Trump – appealing to a crowd of fellow lemons who all stare in scorn at an out of place cherry who holds a sign that reads, “We taste sweeter together.”
As the cherry somberly walks throughout the town, it is bullied by other lemons holding “Zest is Best” and “Vote Lemon!” signs. A TV in the window shows a blue collar lemon wearing a hardhat with the caption, “Stop cookies stealing our dough.”
Then, in an ode to the Brexit decision, a flier waves in the wind across the cherry’s cheeks that reads “Leave.” As it flies through the air, we see a billboard filled with a long line of marshmallows, cookies, strawberries, raspberries and cherries that reads “Melting Point.” That mirrors a similar billboard rolled out by the “Leave” side of the Brexit campaign which showed a picture of a long line of Arab migrants which read “Breaking Point.”
Just as the cherry starts to lose hope and plops down on a park bench at the aptly named “Rosa Park,” a friendly lemon sits down on the same bench. The two share a pair of headphones as a coffee bean jogging by snaps a picture and posts “Maybe Coneville can be sweet after all…” The picture goes viral, with the not-so-subtle hashtag #BetterTogether.
“We think that (just like ice cream!) communities come in all kinds of flavors [and] together we can make One Sweet World.”

Flavor Diversity Is What Makes Ice Cream Great!
The animated ad debuting the flavor delivers a heartwarming – though poignant – message: when democracy gives you lemons, small acts of kindness can be as sweet as lemonade.“We’re concerned that the dominant message we see in society today is one of division,” a post from the company under the video reads. “Whether it's televised political debates or newspaper headlines, it's sometimes easy to think the world is becoming increasingly divided.
