Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson has been cutting a series of ads "proving" how he’s ready to join the presidential debate stage on September 26. Plus, he has been ramping up support across the country – getting a boost from Mitt Romney and Bernie Sanders who agree that Johnson should be on the presidential debate stage. However, his recent gaffe on Morning Joe this morning may hurt his chances of reaching the 15% threshold.
Johnson’s response: “What is Aleppo?”
The stumble may prove to be a serious blow to his campaign. Johnson expressed disappointment about his response, explaining “I’m incredibly frustrated with myself. I have to get smarter and that’s just part of the process.”
Aleppo is a major city in Syria, which has been besieged on three sides, primarily by three main factions fighting for control of the city: Bashar al Assad's pro-government forces, the Free Syrian Army and ISIS. Stuck in the middle are nearly 275,000 civilians who do not have access to stable sources of medical attention, food, water or shelter. The United Nations has called the city – once a metropolitan center – the "apex of horror."
Johnson is currently averaging 8.5% in the polls. Stay tuned to see how this gaffe influences the polls leading up to the debates.
