Well that was fast.
Within less than an hour of President Donald Trump's announcement that he would nominate 49-year old federal appeals judge Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. Gorsuch is the youngest nominee to the Supreme Court in more than a quarter century.
At Gorsuch's nomination announcement, President Trump said "When Justice Scalia passed away suddenly last February, I made a promise top the American people: if I were elected president I would find the very best judge in the country for the Supreme Court."
During his campaign, Trump released a list of possible nominees which he promised he would pick from, should he be elected president. Gorsuch was on that list (which probably explains why the Judicial Crisis Network already had this ad ready to roll).
Trump’s sons Donald Jr. and Eric sat in the front row during the announcement. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen were also in attendance, as were a number of congressional leaders. Scalia’s widow, Maureen, was also in the audience.
If confirmed, Gorsuch is unlikely to swing the ideological balance on the court. Many consider him as largely falling in line with conservatives, as did Scalia.
