The Tea Party Patriots are under heavy scrutiny since airing a political ad attacking Republican Kurt Schaefer, who’s running in the Missouri Attorney General race. A coalition of Asian American businesses and organizations claim the ad portrays xenophobic and racist sentiments.
The ad accuses Schaefer of supporting legislation allowing Chinese companies to purchase Missouri farms – as the ad shows two, dark-suited Asian men in sunglasses.
Tea Party Patriots urge voters to tell Schaefer to “stop helping the Chinese buy our farms.”
Asian American groups in opposition are describing the ad as “racist – and unnecessary” as it pins opposition against foreign investment onto Asians, failing to address the principal issue at hand.
The groups fear the rhetoric and imagery presented in the video will only fuel xenophobic and racist sentiments that could potentially put Asian Americans in Missouri at risk.
