Democratic Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham is the first to announce her bid for Governor of New Mexico in 2018. Current Republican New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez will be termed out, which gives New Mexican politicians an open playing field.
She shared her intentions to run in a two-minute announcement video, where Lujan Grisham explained, "I want to emphasize that that’s what this can be – a new beginning."
She dives into her announcement by explaining the issues New Mexico faces, and how the current governor has failed to address these problems: "The second highest unemployment rate in the country, struggling schools, persistent poverty and high addiction rates..."
Lujan Grisham continues by touching on her past experiences, serving as director of New Mexico's Agency on Aging, the state's Secretary of Health and representing New Mexico's 1st Congressional District since 2012.
She ends, "This will be your campaign and together we will build a New Mexico worthy of our past, and ready for all our tomorrows."
