Mary Thomas, a Tallahassee Republican running for Florida’s 2nd Congressional district seat, released a new political TV ad grilling President Obama on his administration’s initiative allowing transgender students at public schools to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.
“President Obama wants to force public schools to allow boys to use girls’ bathrooms. It’s outrageous, and unconscionable,” Thomas proclaims as the 30-second ad begins with a scene of two boys following a young girl into a ladies’ bathroom.
Invoking the frustration that conservative Florida voters feel towards the Obama Administration’s progressive policy agenda, Thomas declares that “Obama is not a king.” She continues to explain that the Obama Administration’s plan is “yet another example of him forcing his liberal, social engineering agenda on Floridians.”
Thomas is looking set a new tone in District 2 to replace Democrat Gwen Graham, who has pulled out of the 2016 congressional race and is considering running for governor in 2018.
Due to a redistricting in 2015, which has restructured the district to lean sharply Republican, Thomas finds bountiful support where previously moderate Graham was a consistent supporter of the progressive policy agenda set forth by the Obama Administration.
Attempting to separate herself from her conservative counterparts, Thomas is making it a point to brand herself as a “conservative fighter” who will hold the President accountable. Thomas heads into the Republican primary with support from several Conservative leaders including Florida Governor Rick Scott, and interests groups such as Gun Owners of America.
