Democratic New Hampshire Senate candidate Gov. Maggie Hassan is determined to yoke Donald Trump around Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte's neck. She did when Ayotte (briefly) agreed Trump was a "role model", and she's still doing it after Ayotte has said she won't vote for Trump.
Then the narrator goes in for the kill. "But now, she's been caught secretly sending these mail pieces saying 'Donald Trump needs [Senators like Kelly] Ayotte in the [U.S.] Senate.'" The screen fills up with an image of the mailer.
Second, the mailer did not come directly from the Ayotte campaign, but from the New Hampshire Republican State Committee. But to average voters, that may be a distinction without a difference.
So Hassan's political consultants are waving away the nuance. The narrator concludes, "Just more political calculation from Kelly, trying to have it both ways on Donald Trump. She's only looking out for herself." The screen offers one last look at the mailer, just so you don't forget.
Republican Mailer Ties Kelly Ayotte to Donald Trump
Hassan's latest ad "Exposed," begins with local news coverage on how Ayotte renounced her past support for Trump. "Kelly Ayotte has carefully calculated her position on Trump," then says the scolding narrator. The words "calculated" and "Donald Trump" turn blood-red on the screen as foreboding music reverberates. Then the narrator goes in for the kill. Democrats Determined To Yoke Trump to Ayotte
There's a hefty dose of spin here. First, there's no such thing as a "secret" mail piece. Mail naturally attracts less attention than TV and online ads, but there's nothing secretive about sending advertisements through the mail, which can be and often are shared by recipients (as this one was).Second, the mailer did not come directly from the Ayotte campaign, but from the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.
