The Khan family launched into the media spotlight when the story of the death of their son, Capt. Humayun Khan – a Muslim – captured the nation at the DNC. The Khans have since become some of the most outspoken opponents of Donald Trump’s proposed “ban” on Muslims entering the United States.
Khizr Khan has since been traveling the country, talking about Trump’s words undermine his son’s courage and sacrifice for the nation. Now Khan has a question for another lead Republican – one who knows a thing or two about courage and sacrifice: U.S. Senator and decorated Vietnam veteran John McCain.
Captain Humayun Khan was killed in Iraq in 2004, while saving his troops from inspecting a suspicious vehicle, so he could inspect it himself. That was the story that Khizr Khan told the DNC a few weeks ago where he told Donald Trump, “You have sacrificed nothing.”
“Senator McCain,” Khan continues in the ad, “is an embodiment of somebody who has given so much to this country and continues to.”
McCain has been at odds in his own party since the start of the primary when Trump said that McCain wasn’t a war hero “because he was captured.” Despite the insult, McCain eventually endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign anyway.
And in this ad, Khan begs McCain to rescind his endorsement. “If you publicly rebuked [Trump], you will look back and you will stand tall in front of the nation.”
The ad ends with the phone number for McCain’s office with the message, “Call Sen. McCain and tell him: Courage Matters.”
The ongoing tension between McCain and his party’s frontrunner isn’t making his reelection any easier – and neither is this endorsement from a newcomer to the #NeverTrump world.

From Vietnam to Iraq: ‘Why Courage Matters’
“The last book I sent to Capt. Humayun Khan when he was in Iraq,” Khan admits in the ad, “was Sen. McCain’s book ‘Why Courage Matters.’” Khan explains how much his son enjoyed the book and admired McCain’s “sacrifice and the sacrifice of others.”Captain Humayun Khan was killed in Iraq in 2004, while saving his troops from inspecting a suspicious vehicle, so he could inspect it himself. Is John McCain Going to Keep His Senate Seat?
Arizona Senator John McCain is in the middle of what he’s called “the race of my life,” to keep his seat this year. His well-funded Democratic challenger Ann Kirkpatrick has been ahead of him in recent polls – and he is still fending off attacks from the right in his primary against Kelli Ward. The ongoing tension between McCain and his party’s frontrunner isn’t making his reelection any easier – and neither is this endorsement from a newcomer to the #NeverTrump world.
