Environmentalists across the U.S. woke up happy this morning with news that President Barack Obama rejected the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The decision effectively ends the political fight over the Canada-to-Texas project that has hung over the president’s ambitious climate legacy.
NextGen Climate – a pro-green energy group led by billionaire activist Tom Steyer – quickly basked in what they considered a victory and released this ad that rejoiced in the death of the pipeline.
But although the pipeline plans were politically charged from the get-go, pro-environment protests and activism were really only accessories to the death of Keystone XL. The nail in the coffin for the pipeline mostly comes from the success of hydraulic fracturing throughout the U.S.
So climate activists may not want to pack up their picket signs just yet – they still have plenty protest about.
