Last night was the New Hampshire U.S. Senate debate between Kelly Ayotte and Maggie Hassan. Sen. Ayotte was asked whether she would point to Donald Trump as a role model for children.
“Well, I think that certainly, there are many role models that we have,” Ayotte began, hesitantly. “I believe he can serve as president, and so, absolutely, I would do that.”
She tried to backtrack after the debate releasing a statement that said, “I misspoke tonight. While I hope all of our children would aspire to be president, neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have set a good example and I wouldn’t hold up either of them as role models for my kids.”
Unfortunately for Ayotte, Team Hassan immediately turned her debate gaffe into a political ad. “Absolutely” is a 60-second video that kicks off with Ayotte’s statement, then starts showing clips of Trump’s most incendiary comments about Alicia Machado, Megyn Kelly and the disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski.
And with the New Hampshire senate race neck-and-neck, Hassan’s campaign will most likely play this gaffe on repeat until November 8.
