Last week, Keith Ellison launched a political ad in which he made his case for why he thinks he should be the new chair of the Democratic Party. With elections to determine the party’s new leadership taking place this weekend, there has been another round of political ads released – this time Ellison is getting some outside help to.
MoveOn.Org strongly supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election. Although Sanders didn’t secure the nomination, the group is joining him and standing behind Ellison as DNC Chair.
The political video shows clips of Ellison in an interview explaining how he believes the Democratic Party is going to be the champion of the people and how he intends to fight for a fair economy – with the help of the party.
“We’re going to unite ourselves all over this country and fight for an agenda that leads to prosperity and respect for everybody. Very important to have both,” he explains.
In an almost two-minute video, Civil Rights Movement leader Rep. John Lewis shares why he backs Ellison for DNC Chair.
Lewis explains, “You want to make the DNC relevant… he would help our party catch up and make it possible for us to get more people register and turn out more people to vote.”
Lewis commends Ellison’s leadership and commitment and calls him the “man for the times.”
Ellison replied with a letter to DNC members that said it was inappropriate for a candidate to try and “make the race sound like it’s over,” adding, “We are very confident in our whip count and are in an excellent position to win.”
Sound familiar?
Perez was once on Clinton’s short list for VP and has become a symbolic representation for that wing of the party. Likewise, Ellison campaigned with Sanders at various times throughout the primary season and has come to represent the Sanders wing of the party.
Many argue that disagreement between the Clinton and Sanders wings of the Democratic Party didn’t end at last summer’s convention – they were merely put on pause. The next chapter has been the race between Perez and Ellison. And we will see how that chapter ends, this weekend.

The Fight to Lead the Democratic Party in the Era of Trump
Ellison’s biggest challenge comes from former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, who had been trying to set his nomination in stone by contacting DNC members and telling them that he already had secured the vote from 180 out of 224 votes.Ellison replied with a letter to DNC members that said it was inappropriate for a candidate to try and “make the race sound like it’s over,” adding, “We are very confident in our whip count and are in an excellent position to win.”
