Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate Katie McGinty is under attack from the right for increasing taxes for middle class Pennsylvanians.
Both her Republican challenger, Pat Toomey, and a Koch Brothers-backed Republican super PAC, Americans for Prosperity, released political ads on this issue.
In a 30-second ad from the Toomey campaign, the narrator labels McGinty as “Millionaire Katie McGinty” and claimed “every working Pennsylvanian would have been clobbered” under her tax increases.
The ad is referencing her support for raising the income cap for Social Security payroll taxes, as well as her time as a top aide to Governor Tom Wolf when he proposed a multi-billion dollar tax increase.
Americans for Prosperity present the case in a cleverer way, showing a shadowy figure – that is supposed to be McGinty – playing a board game. As she gives the tax dollars to big corporations, she knocks down Pennsylvania families to get to the finish line. Plus, she gets handfuls of fake Monopoly-looking money.
“Time and time again, McGinty rigs the game and we lose,” the narrator ends.
In the Senate, Toomey supported a compromise plan signed by President Barack Obama that allowed tax cuts for individuals making $400,000 or more annually.
Toomey also cast votes on Republican budget resolutions that proposed income tax cuts across the board.
While Toomey casts McGinty as a “millionaire” and McGinty paints Toomey as “out of touch,” the two have remain neck-and-neck in the polls. RealClearPolitics shows McGinty ahead of Toomey by 0.2 points – 42.2% to 42%.
