It looks like the highly-controversial Iran Nuclear deal is here to stay – for now.
The Iranian Nuclear deal was negotiated in 2015 to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The deal is considered one of the greatest landmark foreign policy achievements of Barack Obama’s presidency.
In a new advertisement released by J Street, the liberal pro-Israeli group celebrates the electorate’s support of the Iran Nuclear Deal. The ad brags that every member of Congress who supported the Israeli nuclear deal won their election, despite the tens of millions of dollars spent attacking the deal and its supporters.
The ad points to the reelection of the deal’s proponents, including Rick Nolan of Minnesota, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, who all won despite being attacked for their support of the deal.
J Street also points to the defeat of Senators Mark Kirk and Kelly Ayotte, vocal opponents of the deal, as evidence of voter support of it.
The ad continues to highlight decently strong public support for the Iran Nuclear deal, including 46% of all voters and 45% of independents who support the deal.
It’s not just a good chunk voters and members of Congress who think that the Iran Nuclear Deal is “good policy,” even President Donald Trump is following through with the deal, despite his campaign promise to renegotiate or dismantle it.
Last Monday, President Trump certified that Iran is complying with the deal, at the urging of his top security advisors. He will have to re-certify the deal in another 90 days, so we will see if Trump’s sentiment sticks.
As the deal goes into its third year, it is becoming clear that the Iran Nuclear deal might not only be “good policy,” it’s could also turn into “good politics.”
