Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto has been battling Republican Joe Heck for the coveted Nevada U.S. Senate seat – which will be vacated by Democrat Harry Reid in November.
If elected in November, Cortez Masto would be the first ever Latina elected to the Senate. In Cortez Masto’s recent online ad, “Grandfather,” she proudly narrates the story of her grandfather’s immigration to Nevada from Chihuahua, Mexico.
“He immigrated to the U.S. and was proud to serve our country in WWII. He settled in Nevada, became a baker and started a family,” Cortez Masto recounts as she holds her grandfather’s certificate of naturalization to the screen.
Cortez Masto continues by predicating that the America her grandfather knew – where valuable opportunities are available for immigrants to make a better life for themselves and their family – is “what America should still be today.”
"Grandfather" aired this past weekend on broadcast and cable in Reno and Las Vegas during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
