Republican North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory released a new TV political ad continuing a series where he tells “the truth” about an issue facing his constituents. Last week, McCrory sat in front of the camera to talk about privacy and the controversial HB2 legislation – or the “bathroom bill.”
This week, the 30-second ad “Proof” has a more solemn tone. There isn’t any music or fancy graphics – the ad solely features a woman who shares how she was sexually abused at the age of nine.
“Immediate proof that you’re telling the truth is everything,” the woman explains. “Attorney General Roy Cooper is in charge of our state crime lab.” She continues to explain that rape kits in the lab can still take as long as two years to process, which leaves victims to “stand by powerless.”
“Roy Cooper can never be governor,” she ends with tears in her eyes.
Cooper responded to McCrory’s allegations in his own ad: “What Governor McCrory isn’t telling you is that we cleared the backlog. We also solved over 2000 crimes… we fixed the problems at the crime lab and Governor McCrory knows that.”
Time will tell whose message voters are most moved by – but it’s easier to dismiss a man in a suit than it is the victim of a crime.

McCrory’s new ad is a powerful testimonial, especially since recent news stories reported that city police in the state have destroyed a thousand rape kits.Cooper responded to McCrory’s allegations in his own ad: “What Governor McCrory isn’t telling you is that we cleared the backlog.
