Even as Trump’s approval ratings hit record lows, his base is still standing with him. This is bad news for Senate Democrats running for reelection in 2018.
Democrats are positioned to do well in 2018 elections, but in the Senate, the cards are stacked against them in favor of the GOP. There are 33 senators up for reelection in 2018, and 23 of them are Democrats. What’s worst, there are 10 Democrats running in states that Trump won. In five of those states, Trump won by over 20% of the vote. FiveThirtyEight even predicts that Republicans could even gain several seats next November.
If any Senator is in trouble, it’s Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. The state went for Trump by 42 points, and Governor Jim Justice recently switched parties from Democrat to Republican at a recent Trump rally.
A new ad released by the National Republican Senate Committee points to Manchin as one of their top targets in 2018. The ad starts with premising that West Virginia is a solid red, Pro-Trump state. The ad displays the words “West Virginia choose Trump.” President Trump is seen speaking at a rally, “We won this state by 42 points, can you believe that. 42 points.”
The ad then displays the words “Gov. Jim Justice gets it.” Justice is shown at the same rally, “The Democrats walked away from me. I can’t help you anymore being your Democratic governor. I will be changing my registration to Republican.”
The ad then moves on to attacking Manchin. Manchin is shown reaffirming his membership in the Democratic party, then an excerpt is shown of Manchin on Face the Nation that says, “I support Hillary Clinton. I know Hillary Clinton. I find her to be warm and engaging, compassionate and tough.” The ad ends with the claim that Joe Manchin is out of touch with West Virginia.
When asked by the Charleston Gazette-Mail if Republican attacks have affected his policy decisions, Manchin replied, “I don’t give a s--t, you understand? I just don’t give a s--t. Don’t care if I get elected, don’t care if I get defeated, how about that. If they think because I’m up for election, that I can be wrangled into voting for s--t that I don’t like and can’t explain, they’re all crazy.”
