Today MoveOn, one of the largest progressive organizing groups in the United States, released a video encouraging the public to demand that their representatives make fixing the Dream Act a priority before the end of the year.
The video features many Republican lawmakers speaking openly about their support of DREAMers. The video features Senate President Pro Tem Orrin Hatch of Utah, who says that DREAMers are “brilliant, brilliant young people who can add a great deal to our country”.
Another law maker, Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo even went so far as to say that he “would not fund any appropriation bills that funds the government beyond December 31st unless we get this DACA issue resolved.” Other lawmakers featured include Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ).
Getting Congress to move on a permanent fix to the DREAM Act became a top priority in early September, after the Trump administration decided to discontinue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program started by the Obama Administration. Trump gave DREAMers (beneficiaries of the DACA program) a six-month grace period to give Congress an opportunity to come up with a permanent legislative solution before the program would be gone for good.
Since September special elections, the Mueller investigation, and tax reform have taken the spotlight away from the impending DACA deadline. The video argues “most commonsense Americans agree” on finding a permanent fix for DREAMers. But with higher priority legislation and the budget fight looming, it seems unlikely that DREAMers will get enough of Congress’s attention in the next month.
