Kathleen Matthews, a Democratic candidate running in Maryland’s 8th congressional district, takes aim at gun violence in her first political TV ad.
“11 O’Clock” highlights Matthews’s frustration with the growing stories of gun violence – especially the ones she had to report on for 25 years at ABC’s affiliate station in Washington D.C., WJLA-TV.
The ad shifts to a list of steps she will take if elected to congress, which includes expanding background checks, mandating gun safety locks and banning assault weapons.
Matthews says, “Let’s show the NRA we’re not afraid of them, as Democrats, as Americans, as parents.”

Matthews, who is married to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, faces a crowded Democratic field after the incumbent, Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen, announced he would not seek reelection in order to pursue the Maryland Senate seat.
