“I’m a businessman, I solve problems,” Democratic candidate for West Virginia Governor Jim Justice begins his new political ad.
Justice goes on to attack his Republican opponent, State Senator Bill Cole, claiming that he wasted “over half a million dollars” of taxpayer money on a special session to pass a budget – “that solved nothing,” Justice adds.
Justice suggests that in order to balance the budget, West Virginia needs good jobs that increase state revenue and decrease the unemployment.
“This is not that hard,” Justice explains.
It ended up taking nearly a month-long, which cost the state $600,000. Governor Tomblin ended up vetoing the budget, since it didn’t have any plan for revenue-producing measures, including raising taxes.
The Governor and the State Legislature ended up crafting a bipartisan plan to help pass the new budget – but Justice can now use Cole’s mishap as political ammunition in the gubernatorial election.

The West Virginian Budget
In January 2016, West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin explained the state was facing an estimated $350 million shortfall. Cole, the President of the Senate, called for a three-day extension of the legislative session in order to craft a new budget to help absorb the budget. It ended up taking nearly a month-long, which cost the state $600,000.
