In her first TV political ad, Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick pushes term limits and attacks Arizona Senator John McCain for being in Washington, D.C. for 30 years.
Kirkpatrick starts off by touting her Arizona roots – her father was a Democrat who ran a country store and her mother was a Republican school teacher. "I learned that both parties have good ideas, but that's not how Congress works anymore," she adds.
As Kirkpatrick talks about “career politicians,” multiple screens of John McCain appear.
McCain’s spokesperson Lorna Romero attacked Kirkpatrick and her ad commenting, "It is laughable that a liberal incumbent Member of Congress running her sixth political campaign in the last decade would begin her Senate campaign calling for term limits.”
“The only way to change Washington is to change the system and fight for a solution Arizonans also tell me it’s time for: term limits,” Kirkpatrick writes.
She proposes that members of the House should serve three terms and senators should only serve two.
Kirkpatrick points to McCain for being the “strongest proof point one can muster for changing our political system.” She adds, “He abandoned ‘Maverick’ for ‘I support the nominee of my party’ because ‘I’m a loyal Republican.’”
According to the campaign, “It’s Time” will air in Arizona’s largest media markets as part of a six-week $1.5 million ad buy. Kirkpatrick is running unopposed in the August 30 Democratic primary and is gearing up for an intense general election fight.
