Republican Rep. Darrell Issa narrowly won his reelection bid in California’s 49th district, but there’s no time to take a break. His 2016 Democratic opponent, Doug Applegate, has already announced he wants a rematch in 2018.
In a Facebook post, Applegate announced with a link to his contribution page, “The 49th deserves leadership that puts people ahead of partisan politics, period. As a Marine Colonel, I know that the hardest fights often take a couple of battles – That’s why I’m announcing my intention to run for Congress in 2018!”
Issa, the wealthiest member of Congress, had never faced a competitive election since his first congressional election in 2000, securing re-election in 2014 by 20 points. He only beat Applegate by over 2000 votes, according to unofficial results.
