A pro-Roy Moore super PAC turning up the culture war as high as possible in their new ad – titled, “Bake the Cake” – and frankly, it’s kind of gross.
The ad is only 30 seconds long, but still manages to hit just about every base in the culture war you can think of.
With a shot of the Dallas Cowboys kneeling at a game, a grizzled narrator says, “Kneeling to support killing police officers, and hating America is okay. But not to worship god.” Ironically that last part has a big “BANNED” stamp over – you guessed it – a bunch of NFL players kneeling on the field (to pray).
“That’s what Doug Jones and the Democrats are all about,” the narrator continues – connecting Jones to Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren (Women), Chuck Schumer (Jewish) and Cory Booker (African American). The dirty politicking that has become the primal specialty of Steve Bannon, and the racial dog whistling that lines his deeply anti-American ideology should be lost on no one.
And of course, what 30 second Bannonized spot would be complete without inducing a phantom fear into the very constituents he and his cronies claim to fight for? “Now they want to stop Christians from speaking out. Forcing us to bake a cake and celebrate things we don’t believe in,” the narrator adds, as we a see a picture of a same sex couple with signs that say “Just married.”
Unfortunately for the folks behind this ad, if anyone “forces” any conservatives to bake a cake for a gay couple, it won't the leftist Gestapo Courageous Conservatives PAC wants viewers to be afraid of – it will be the United States Supreme Court. And since that case is just now being heard by the court, it is clearly still an “if.” But this important distinction is apparently not important enough to be included in the ad. Plus the lie is too useful for Courageous Conservatives PAC to lend any sort of nuance too.
Need I even mention the subtle irony of the ad opening with a call to respect the law – only to turn around and condemn it as a form leftist-fascism being imposed on well-meaning Christians only 15 seconds later?
The ad ends with a simple call to action: “Roy Moore, Senate. Let’s take our country back.” Back from whom you ask?
It doesn’t matter. As long as there is profit to be made, there can be a bogeyman behind every corner.
