With Russ Fulcher’s exit from the Idaho Gubernatorial race, Tommy Ahlquist now only has two other Republicans – Lt. Gov. Brad Little and Rep. Raul Labrador – standing in his way to the party’s nomination, and potentially the Governor’s mansion in 2018. So far, no Democrats have announced their entrance into the race.
Ahlquist is a first-time candidate, previously an E.R. doctor and currently a Chief Operating Officer for Gardner Co., who sees “his newcomer status as a strength, not a weakness.” He says to get any name recognition – which is something both his competitors hold over him – he needs to get himself out there and shake hands, and he’s doing just that.
In one of the first ads of the election, Dr. Ahlquist outlines how he plans on getting the nomination. Ahlquist visited “97 towns in the first 75 days, over 100 Idaho small businesses,” boasts the ad’s narrator. The other candidates have experience in Idaho government, so he is working to bridge that gap by advertising earlier than typical in an election of this stature.
“Tommy Ahlquist has a conservative vision, a blueprint to cut $100 million dollars in the first 100 days,” the narrator continues. “He’ll lower our tax burden, stop wasting hard-earned tax dollars, make government more accountable.”
According to the ad, Ahlquist has “new ideas, fresh approach, and a conservative blueprint to build a better Idaho.”
The primary is set to take place May 25, 2018.
