Meet Earl Grey, the Halifax cat running for Canadian Prime Minister as the leader of the Tuxedo Party of Canada. But unlike here in The States where faux candidates mostly enter the race as a joke, this furry Canadian’s platform is very real: reform Canada’s out of date animal cruelty laws.
The video aptly takes on the feel of a 19th century silent movie. It highlights some social changes Canada has gone through since 1892, like women’s right to vote and the history of the Stanley Cup. But then the video begs the question: why haven’t the animal cruelty laws changed?
Earl Grey’s campaign manager (and owner) Hugh Chisholm says that the laws are both ineffective and inadequate, and they allow for “people to be able to move from province to province to escape animal cruelty charges.”
Earl Grey isn’t new to the political arena; in 2013 he ran for Premier of Nova Scotia. His brother, Tuxedo Stan, also ran for Mayor of Halifax in 2012.
Neither of them won, but both cats have a dedicated base (the Internet) that helped raise awareness about the province’s feral cat population. The money raised by the Tuxedo Party is used to spay or neuter cats in need.
The Tuxedo Party may not stop with Canada though – rumor has it the party is exploring their options in the States as well.
“I know there’s going to be an American election, and we’ve got another cat named TJ who we think may have some American ancestry,” Chisholm said.
“We’ve got more Facebook followers from the U.S. than we do from Canada, so they’re ripe for the picking down there. I think if we put TJ up against Donald Trump it’s no contest. He’ll beat the Donald paws down.”
