Polls show Republican Sen. David Vitter will survive Louisiana's Oct. 24th "jungle primary," but could get trounced by the Democrat John Bel Edwards in the runoff.
Vitter has been suffering attacks on his past experiences with prostitutes, either directly by the anti-Vitter Gumbo PAC, or implicitly, like the Bel Edwards ad "Honor Code" that praises him for his "honor and integrity" and for living his "values." As a result, his numbers in the four-way race have been stuck in the 20s.
So Vitter is using a tried and true approach for countering the character attacks: his wife.
Wendy doesn't address the prostitution scandal head-on; she spends her time addressing a different set of attacks, that he's a "Washington politician."
She assures, "David has the courage to stand up to the Baton Rouge politicians" citing his earlier work to establish term limits on Louisiana legislators, and how he "refused to take his congressional pension ... he returned it to the taxpayers."
But while she doesn't directly address Vitter's tawdry past, Vitter's political consultants are acutely aware that having Wendy firmly attest to Vitter's values is necessary to mitigate the damage to his reputation.
