The powerful chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is facing what some have said could be “the toughest primary of his 15-year career.” Now, he stands accused of betraying his district by his Republican primary opponent. In a rematch of a 2014 contest, retired Coast Guard Captain Art Halvorson is challenging Rep. Bill Shuster in Pennsylvania’s 9th District. With no Democrat filing to run, the winner of the April 26 primary will represent the heavily Republican district. A new ad from Halvorson, entitled “Shuster Betrayal,” isn’t shy about taking on establishment Republicans. It depicts former Speaker John Boehner, Shuster and current Speaker Paul Ryan, as the narrator claims, “We elected Republicans to fight for us, but they sold us out to lobbyists.” The ad attacks Shuster from the right, accusing him of using taxpayer dollars to fund “Obamacare, amnesty and even Planned Parenthood.” It alleges, “Shuster raised [the national debt] 5 times,” and hits him for sending jobs overseas to China, “thanks to Shuster’s vote for Obamatrade.” The ad ends by borrowing a tagline from Donald Trump, stamping a big “You’re Fired” across Shuster’s face.
