Will the progressive left run primary opponents against incumbent moderate Democrats? The latest video from Bernie Sander’s Our Revolution implies they might.
The primary energy in the Democratic party is coming from the progressive left. Liberals who supported Bernie Sanders in the democratic primary are highly active in the resistance movement to the Republican agenda. But it’s beginning to look like progressives are expecting all Democrats to vote according to their platform.
In an upbeat video released by Our Revolution, members of Congress join Our Revolution staffers at a Washington D.C. rally to promote the organization’s People’s Platform. The People's Platform includes Medicare for all, $15 minimum wage, automatic voter registration, ending private prisons etc. The entire platform can be found here.
The ad begins with Our Revolution President, Nina Turner, speaking at the rally in front of the Capitol Building, “I believe sisters and brothers, if we can go to the moon, we can have Medicare of all.” She continues, “This is not about party affiliation, this is about people affiliation. Who are you standing for?”
The ad continues with a montage of liberal representatives speaking at the podium, including Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Pramila Jayapal of Washington, and Raúl Grijalva of Arizona. The members call for bold, courageous actions in the fight for environmental protection, a living wage and the country’s democracy.
The ad then implies that Our Revolution may be looking to primary incumbent Democrats who do not adopt the progressive platform. The ad continues with staffer Keanuu Smith-Brown, the Our Revolution Maryland State Committeeman, saying, “We charge every member of Congress to do what you are elected to do, or we are coming for you in the next election.” This is followed by Nina Tuner speaking into a megaphone saying, “If the Democrats won’t do it, we gonna have to get some new folks.”
The Tea Party gained recognition in 2010 for successfully running far right candidates against moderate, incumbent Republicans. Our Revolution and the progressive left are energized, and ready for the 2018 election. The question is, will Our Revolution be taking a page from the Tea Party playbook?
