Alex Meluskey, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Arizona, launched a TV ad attacking Senator John McCain’s ties to a nonprofit that received a $1 million donation from the Saudi Arabian government in 2014.
The spot asks, “What commitments did [Saudi Arabia] get in return? Arms deals? Ignoring human rights abuses?”
Meluskey responds, “I'm running against John McCain in the Republican primary, and with me, you'll never have to ask such questions.”
Federal law bans foreign contributions to political campaigns, but that law doesn’t apply to nonprofits.
“Senator McCain intended to convey that he had nothing to do with the solicitation of the Saudi donation to the McCain Institute,” McCain’s spokeswoman Rachael Dean commented.
However, Meluskey’s ad implies there’s more to the story – flashing new clips of McCain dodging questions and giving praise to “the Saudis and Prince Bandar.”
Melusky and McCain will face off in the GOP primary on August 30, 2016. In the meantime, check out Meluskey’s other campaign ad targeting McCain on the refugee crisis.
