Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa jumped into the 2018 California gubernatorial election last week, confirming the speculations for what is bound to be one of the most competitive races in the country in 2018.
In his announcement video, Villaraigosa addresses the recent presidential election outcome and explains that “this is exactly the time to remember the vision that has always made California great.”
“I want to unite our state around solutions… and I want to make sure that every voice is heard, particularly those who have been ignored or left behind,” he comments.
For the past year, Villaraigosa has been on a listening tour throughout California to speak with voters about the issues they face on a day-to-day basis.
In a press release that accompanied Villaraigosa’s campaign announcement, he explained, “What I have heard is that Californians want the same thing – a prosperous California where everyone who works hard has a decent chance of getting into, and staying in, the middle class.”
Villaraigosa isn’t the only one who has jumped in the race. California State Treasurer John Chiang, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin have also declared their candidacy.
If Villaraigosa is elected, he would be California’s first Latino governor since 1875.
Villaraigosa will have a formal campaign kickoff in the next few months. Learn more about the candidate here and stay tuned as we continue to follow the election.
