Earlier this month, Anna Throne-Holst, a Democratic candidate for New York’s 1st congressional district, released a scathing attack ad against Republican Lee Zeldin’s record on gun control.
Now her campaign is taking it one step further by pulling apart his voting record. The ad attacks Rep. Zeldin’s legislation for allowing suspected terrorists to buy guns. According to Throne-Holst’s ad, the Daily News called his bill “a sham” after it was endorsed by the NRA.
Additionally, the ad claims Zeldin took thousands of campaign contributions from the gun lobby and then voted against closing the terrorist loophole – 25 times.
“Lee Zeldin supports the gun lobby, lock, stock and barrel,” the ad ends.
The legislation has bipartisan opposition in the House. The House Freedom Caucus claims it fails “to do enough to address the threat of radical Islamic terrorism and because of the inclusion of gun control provisions that fail to adequately protect due process.”
And on the left side of the aisle, Democrats instead support a bill sponsored by Rep. Peter King (and opposed by the NRA) that “does not require law enforcement to show probable cause and get a court order to prevent someone on a terrorist watch list from buying a firearm.”
Unfortunately for Zeldin, it looks like he won’t be able to brag about a bipartisan win before Election Day.

Lee Zeldin’s Gun Control Legislation
Rep. Zeldin introduced the Protect America Act of 2015 to “deny the transfer of firearms or the issuance of explosives licenses to known or suspected terrorists, and for other purposes.”The legislation has bipartisan opposition in the House. The House Freedom Caucus claims it fails “to do enough to address the threat of radical Islamic terrorism and because of the inclusion of gun control provisions that fail to adequately protect due process.”
