When Donald Trump burst onto the political scene last summer, he simultaneously insulted various constituencies and Republican elites, including decorated war veteran Sen. John McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War.
American Future Fund, which is led by former Mitt Romney advisors, is focusing all of its energy in the 2016 cycle on taking out Donald Trump. The group’s latest set of ads feature two veterans, testifying against Donald Trump, and making the case that he would be dangerous for America’s national security.
In the first ad, we meet Afghanistan Special Forces Commander Lt. Col. Michael Waltz contends, “Donald Trump hasn’t served this country a day in his life.”
He continues to “essentially” pin Trump as a Vietnam draft dodger. Referring to his insults to McCain, Lt. Col. Waltz says, “it’s something that I just personally can’t stomach, and I’m sickened by – as should every veteran and every soldier in the United States military.”
And as a kicker, he says Trump is someone he doesn’t think is tough, “in any way, shape or form.” We’ll see if that one gets under the Teflon Don’s shell.
The next spot features Vietnam pilot and POW, Lt. Col. Tom Hanton, who is more direct about his contention with Trump’s insults to McCain.
“When I heard Donald Trump insult my fellow prisoners of war,” Hanton says, “that was the most infuriating comment I think I’ve heard from a politician… in my entire life.”
Then, paired with grainy footage from Vietnam, Hanton swears, “ Trump would not have survived the POW experience – he would have been probably the first one to fold.
Like the previous ad, we hear Hanton warn voters to learn more about Trump’s real record, calling him a “con man,” and a “phoney” – a direct shot at Trump’s “tell it like it is” appeal.
American Future Fund is just a recent addition to the anti-Trump coalition, which includes virtually all of his Republican rivals, the Club For Growth, Karl Rove, Mitt Romney and even the Pope – all to little avail. Maybe the Pope should get a second chance, since it looks like the Republicans are going to need a miracle to stop Trump.

The GOP Cannibalizes Its Frontrunner
To the extent that there is even such thing as “establishment” Republicans any more, they are all in a mad scramble to stop the rise of Trump – who is starting to look more and more like he will be the party’s nominee.American Future Fund is just a recent addition to the anti-Trump coalition, which includes virtually all of his Republican rivals, the Club For Growth, Karl Rove, Mitt Romney and even the Pope – all to little avail.
