American Bridge, a liberal super PAC, is not letting President-elect Donald Trump – and Republican Senators – get off easy with the latest Cabinet appointments. The first 2018 campaign attack ad by the PAC takes a look into Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson and his connection with Russia.
The ad includes clips of high profile Republicans concerned about Tillerson's past. Senator John McCain on Face the Nation explains that he's concerned that "he has such a close personal relationship with Vladimir Putin."
American Bridge's effort includes promoted Facebook posts specifically targeting Sens. Jeff Flake, Dean Heller and Marco Rubio within their states.
The PAC's President Jessica Mackler explained, "American Bridge is launching these ads to highlight the alarmingly close ties between Tillerson and Vladimir Putin and the grave threat a pro-Putin State Department would pose to our nation’s security."
Heller and Flake are both up for re-election in 2018. Rubio, though not up for re-election, could cast a shadow over Tillerson’s nomination by voting no during the Foreign Relations Committee hearing.
Rubio has already said he has “serious concerns” about the ExxonMobil CEO's ties to the Russian President. If the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approves Tillerson, then the motion moves to the Senate floor and he has to receive a majority vote.
